Tomato Dreams

Post by Hovannes »

I'm thinking about the 2025 garden--specifically the tomatoes.
Sweet or Super Sweet 100s are always prolific and great additions to salads, so they're in.
San Marzano is a lovely tomato grown in Italy's volcanic soil, but darn it, it isn't the same when grown in my local loam, so I think I'll plant Romas instead. For sandwich tomatoes I've always wanted to try Mortgage Lifters but I've heard the don't keep well, and with---fingers crossed---a bountiful harvest, that could be a problem so Big Beef will probably get the nod. It did very well last year.
I do have to have at least one heirloom and Conssolute Genovese was the most productive from last year, so I think I'll add one of those to my shopping list. That's four plants maybe five if I double down on Beefsteaks, so they should be a lot less work---and require less water---than last year's dozen tomato plants

With recent temps in the 80s I've been thinking of my spring garden already. The winter garden was covered in snow a few weeks ago. As far as tomatoes, I'm looking for Gulf State Market tomato, or the new Louisiana Gulf State, if I can find some in stock. https://www.lsuagcenter.com/profiles/lb ... 4970752457

I bought a pack of Louisiana Gulf State seed from Heritage yesterday, (1 pack limit).

I've been growing Better Boys the past few years. They do well. Even with the super dry summer we had last year, we still got a decent harvest. I've never had any luck with heirlooms. I want to get to the point of having a totally heirloom garden and keep seeds from year to year and start them in a greenhouse.
