C&D Burley Flake

Post by Bloodhound »

C&D offers their Burley Flakes in a few numbered blends, Burley Flake #1, #2, #3, and #4. They are a cut flake and #2 and #4 are a milder and softer blend with good but not outstanding flavor. #1 and #3 are more powerful and take advantage of the Dark Fired Burley in the blends, with #1 being the big powerhouse and #3 being just a little more mild. When I say Powerhouse, I am talking not only flavor and room note, but also Vitamin "N". Either #1 or #3 with take the starch out of a smoker with less experience. #1 is on par with G&H Dark Flake...so tread lightly and make sure you have some food in your stomach or it will be a ride on the tilta-hurl.

Keep in mind that all the C&D blends tend to benifit from a little age, as they are packed fresh. Enjoy the Burley side of life

I opened a tin of Burley Flake #4 a few years ago and started puffing with abandon. The latakia was delicious.

Then the nicotine knocked my pecker into my watch pocket.

I sealed it in a jar and now I check on it, every once in a while.

The #4 is one of my tins that I keep at the cabin for evenings on the porch.

I like burley. Haven't tried too many different burley blends though.

I forget how many of the blend numbers I've tried, but I've ended up with more tins of the 2 for some reason. Reportedly, burley changes very little with age, but C&D blends all seem to improve wrt flavor and bite with some aging, regardless. The longer the better, but 6 months minimum is my norm, and I also let it dry out somewhat.

An aside: For some reason I can imagine Rusty laughing at my last sentence. I can't remember if he was into burleys at all, but I'm thinking not too much.

When some of Rusty's pipes were made available to us, I got a Savinelli Canadian and with it was copy of Rusty's notes for the pipe...it had been a pipe that he only smoked Burley tobacco's in.

I have maintained that and only smoke dark fired burley blends in it...with the only exeption being Bow Legged Bear...but BLB has a lot of Burley even though its also got Virginias, Turkish, Latakia, Burleys, and Perique...so its kind of a Burley blend...
