Sutliff & Mac Baren Closing

I started with Mac Baren Symphony way back. I think it was the first tin I bought.

I don't smoke much MacB these days, but I've always enjoyed "just seeing them" on the shelves in my local pipe shop, and I always appreciated how they would put new things out every now and then.

It might be more for sentimental reasons, but I'll miss 'em.

I bought some Sutliff tins in the past but haven't smoked much by them. I thought I read somewhere that they were America's oldest blender?
Wishing you God's very best!

Just checking up on this news....

The Mac Baren website still lists several varieties. Oddly, there are no marketing descriptions of flavors and blending tobaccos to entice smokers to explore. It's like they given up, even typing. Click on the label logo, and you get a larger label logo.

Several old blends like Dark Twist and Cube are still available.

On a lark, I searched for some real tobacco.

I did smoke MacBarens long ago, he Latakia Blend, which Rusty didn't recognize as a real Latakia Blend, however the coins added to my pipe puffing education.
A pipe puffing compadre in the youth loved Plum Cake. Sutliff never did fare well with me, their flagship Mixture 79 struck me as being a Lakeland Wannabe and the latest incarnation of Aros sporting really cool illustrated labels were, to me, disappointing.
I won't miss either, but their loss is disturbing if it's indicative of market realities.

Mixture 79 was my boss' smoke in the late 70s, so I tried it, but it wasn't an everyday smoke. Another co-worker at the same place and time smoked the 3-star Blue Label from Iwan Ries, and I liked it much better. Reportedly it was/is blended by Sutliff, so I don't know what the latest is or will be with that.

The first time I ever bought a second tin of a blend I had tried, it was Mac Baren Navy Flake...it was a good blend, but you had to go slow or suffer the tongue burn. I moved on and didn't see much Mac Baren until I discovered their MM blends...Smooth and no bite.
