I blame the Dutch. And Al Gore. Before he invented the internet, you learned about bands from the radio and musicians had to sound good to be on the radio. You'd enjoy Aerosmith without knowing how ugly Steven Tyler was/is. Or Carly Simon. Or Janis Joplin. After the internet, musicians have to look good.
