Absolutely useless facts about you nobody cares about

GaryInVA wrote: 02 Jul 2024, 05:39 Update, cannot buy a new car. Seems a hacker has shut down 15,000 dealerships and they're reduced to doing deals on paper (most aren't even doing that).

So, we are borrowing my mother-in-law 's car that is a lot smaller. I bought a rooftop bag carrier that attaches to the car's rails. It'll be tight but we should make it home.

Depending on what the Kia dealership tells me this evening I'll be leaving our car in SC and will send my brother-in-law the title and we'll find someone who buys junk cars.
Total fail, my friend. Not only do I care, I was worried about this. Continuing to pray for a safe trip home. It's always something. Your mother in law is alright by me.

Next update. There were no service bulletins or recalls that covered the problem we are having. So, we are borrowing my mother-in-law's car, finishing up our trip.

We are leaving our car in SC and I am sending my brother-in-law the title after we get back to Texas. We'll find someone in SC that buys junk cars sell it, and work on getting a replacement back in Texas.

Thanks to everyone who has prayed for us.

This month the Passat gets towed to the shop to fix the repair made by the dealership in Colma.

Don't you wish there was a clear demarcation, a line in the sand, when you know it's fruitless to throw money at it? Before you know it, you're a few years down the road, having spent $15,000 to fix/maintain a $10,000 car.

My FIL says that the line in the sand is when repair fees exceed a new car payment. I get what he is saying, but somehow this makes the decision MORE confusing for me, not less.

+1, to all of the above, and a prayer your way Gary, it looks like you have a good plan. For whatever it's worth, my wife and I have been there, figuratively and literally (in S. Carolina), both.

Our 2013 Explorer entered the keep-it-running stage last year I think, or maybe it was 2022, when we spent somewhere over $2000 on it. Spent $500 last week in fact, to put on a new AC idler pulley and new belt. Dina doesn't have new-car-itus so far, so that's good.

A large Coast Guard helicopter just did a low pass over the runway in my back yard.

We are pretty far from the nearest coastline.... even Lake Michigan.
