I confess that in view of recently turning 70 years old, the reality of impermanence in our physical world is a wee bit overwhelming.
Dante in his medieval centric spirituality gives the reader a refreshing dose of reality that runs parallel with the ever changing, ever decaying modern real world.
I must also confess to reading other writers on books I review because I'll often miss nuances that may enrich the prospective reader's experience.
In this case I reached for the Saint Austin Review September/October 2012 issue Homage to Dante celebrating the 700th anniversary of The Divine Comedy. where I found this which pretty much sums thigs up:

“We like to refer to the world we live in as the “real world.” It is indeed real as far as it goes, but it is not permanent. The (Divine) Comedy reflects an understanding that Hell and Heaven, while unseen, are more real, so to speak, because they are permanent.”
